Rowan's reading and drawing are really taking off. He's surprising us all the time with words he knows. He surprises his teacher, too. It's all clicking. Here are some of his latest creations:
We had Deedee and Granddad as overnight guests Easter eve and Easter day, which was a treat. The kids dyed eggs and found candy, lava lamps, and bathrobes awaiting them Easter morning. We did the requisite egg hunt in the yard, and there were no complaints about the variety (or lack thereof) of candy received. Fiona experienced the post-celebration blues that evening, to which she is prone, but otherwise it was a lovely holiday. We were laughing because at a recent visit to our Jewish dentist, he seemed surprised to learn that the kids eat candy. He asked where they get it, and I explained that Easter, Halloween, Christmas, Valentine's Day -- all of the major holidays feature candy. The kids don't know why we celebrate Easter, but they do expect to receive a chocolate bunny in their baskets. That's just the kind of heathens we are raising: good people who live for dessert. Fiona has glasses! She needs them for reading, but she's discovered they're actually handy most of the time. I guess it's one of those things where you don't know what you've been missing until you do. That said, she really doesn't wear them much at home. At school, they caused quite a commotion (in the good way). I went in feeling skeptical, but the 2nd grade dance was pretty sweet. The kids -- and some of the adults -- danced their hearts out. Fiona'd really hoped Daddy would be her chaperone, but he was sick so she got stuck with me. It was a fun night. When Rowan gets up in the morning, he puts on his shark blanket and sometimes his SuperMan slippers and heads downstairs (unless he's the first one up, in which case he waits either in the hallway or in my bed). He needs to spend a certain amount of time in this getup before he is willing to get dressed, and he most certainly needs to have breakfast before dressing. On the weekends, good luck motivating him to put on outside clothes. Between his speech patterns and his security blanket, he sometimes reminds me of Linus. Two of Rowan's favorite things: magnatiles and the US puzzle, which he can literally do backward and upside down. Fiona is learning the 50 nifty United States song at school and he's decided to learn it, too (Alexa has it in her catalog). Rowan's reading and drawing are really taking off. He's surprising us all the time with words he knows. He surprises his teacher, too. It's all clicking. Here are some of his latest creations: Heading to sunshiney Florida tomorrow! My skin is longing for sun and heat. Yesterday, Fiona had butterflies in her stomach because she was so excited. Grandma, here we come!
