Jessica ended the visit by reading the kids a story. Rowan sat with the other kids on the rug while I sat separately. He seemed to be listening and engaged, smiling, relaxed, though the other kids called out "duck!" or what ever other animals Cat the Cat was meeting. At the end of the story, Rowan approached Jessica again to tell her something or other, I can't remember. He wasn't the least bit interested in the other kids, but he certainly liked Jessica.
Rowan was delighted to join the ranks of school-going children on Thursday. I was trying not to make too big a deal about it, but every so often in the days leading up to the big event, I asked if he was looking forward to school and he consistently responded, "Yup!" He had a meet-and-greet -- just an hour -- to get the lay of the land, meet his teacher, and (bonus) have a chocolate doughnut. When we arrived, he asked, "Is this my school?" We hadn't visited since January and it's not in a location that we ever have need to drive past, so it's no wonder he wasn't sure. But we went inside and met one of the directors, and Rowan started telling her about his 'piderman sunglasses. She led us to his classroom, and he grabbed my hand so he could show me their pet bunny (Rosie). The teacher showed him some Magformer-type blocks so he built for a while ("I made a house!"), but then the magic word was uttered -- "trucks" -- and that drew his attention to the area where the vehicles are housed. So he got busy with the trains and tracks. Teacher Jessica rang her triangle, signaling that it was time to play outside. Rowan ultimately settled into the enormous sandbox with a giant truck and a shovel. He chatted with Jessica about how we'd given Otis some treats that morning (I tried to keep my distance and let him do his thing, but she clearly had no idea what he was saying, so I stepped in to translate). We hit a snag when it was time to go back inside; Rowan had no intention of leaving the sandbox. Both the teacher and the aide explained to Rowan that it was time to go in but he could come back and play next time, but he just ignored them. Finally, I persuaded him to get out by reminding him that we would be leaving soon to go see his friend Jude (and, as Rowan remembered, he'd get to play with Jude's trains). This week has gone well, too! He's excited about school and is eager to go, even now that I've been disappearing during the three hours. I think he will be disappointed on Friday when he discovers he has to stay home with me. Fiona's first day was, to quote Fiona, "Great!" She was nervous but confessed to being a little excited, too. Her teacher is warm and charismatic, and a smart dresser to boot. Fiona's sitting at the yellow table, and if they are good listeners they earn blocks; at the end of the week, the table with the most blocks gets to pick something from the treasure chest. That's about all I know about school so far, but what's not to love about a treasure chest. Fiona was less enthusiastic this morning, day 2. "I don't wanna go!" When I reminded her that yesterday she'd loved it, she said, "Yeah, but that was only at the end when we did centers." Sigh. There was a kid literally kicking and screaming this morning; Fiona's protest, in contrast, was mild. She just wanted to make it known that she'd rather do something else. Having made her point, she solemnly walked in with her classmates. I wish she were more excited, but she'll be fine.
