Rowan is 2-1/2! We celebrated with Falafel Hut dinner and peanut butter cup ice cream for dessert. When Rowan's not playing with trains or cars or trucks, he's reading about them. He's got his sister's love of books; lately he can be found in a pile of 'em. The book of the moment is "The Little Red Caboose," a Little Golden Book about a disgruntled caboose who saves the day. I suspect some of his affection for this book comes from his mantra: "Fiona, engine; Rowan, caboose." Fiona slaved over her 23 valentines. As in past years, she instructed me to cut out hearts from red paper, which she thoughtfully decorated with stickers. After doing five completely on her own, we came to a compromise: I'd write "Happy Valentine's Day" and she'd write her friends' names and "From, Fiona." The process only took three days. She was proud of the end results and thrilled to receive cards from her classmates. "I can't believe William loves me!" she sighed over one, which was puzzling since a. she got cards from everyone and b. his card was not the least bit affectionate and c. she has never mentioned William before (though she's mentioned having crushes on other boys). Ah, the mysterious ways of the five-year-old heart. Fiona has been itching to give Dada his Valentine's Day gift for weeks: a beautiful heart pillow she made in sewing class. She gave me a very sweet barrette she also made in sewing, and assures me that when she finishes her next project that it will be for me, too. Dada and I gave the kids mini rose bushes (they'll decorates their rooms until we can plant them in the spring) and little heart-shaped boxes of chocolate (Fiona's awed reaction: "Chocolate!" and Rowan's parroted reaction: "Thaa-whit!"). Fiona and I joined some friends at NYC Ballet Family Day a couple of weeks ago for an hour-long Balanchine program. Fiona insisted on wearing a leotard-style dress with attached tutu, so I suggested she wear my old leg warmers over her tights (see photo). The program was very cool and probably the perfect amount of ballet for me; the girls claimed to love it, too, but after 15 minutes they were antsy, rocking in their seats, staring at the ceiling. Still, it was a thrill to hang in the city for a few hours, take the train and ride the subway, eat lunch out, and, of course, to see Lincoln Center. We may wait a couple of years until we do it again.
