Happy birthday to our little guy (video here)! Oh, that smile. Oh, those big, full-body hugs. Oh, the thrilled shouting: "Star!" "Moon!" "Butterfly!" The whispered "thank you"s and "bless you"s. The singing and dancing (you *must* check out this video of the kids dancing). The silly sense of humor. Lately, Rowan's been using two-word phrases. "Blue car." "Hi, Mommy!" "Bye-bye [fill in the blank]." Animals and vehicles (other than cars) are still known by the sound they make, rather than by name. Cow is "moo" -- actually most animals are "moo." Dog is "brr," though sometimes he'll say "puppy." Cat is "meow" -- not the high-pitched meowy sound he used to make, but in his normal voice. "Vroom" -- or maybe its more like "umm" -- means trucks, buses, ambulances, fire trucks, which may be his favorite things in the entire world (add trains and planes to that list, which both sound like "thlane"). We got a book out of the library called "Fire Engines" by a woman with some special degree initials following her name. It is dry and simple and has photos of fire trucks and firemen. It is currently on the top of Rowan's hot list. Rowan's eye teeth are on the verge of eruption, but for now his smile is adorably gapped. He's not the hearty eater that he was, though it doesn't take much to make him give a satisfied "mmm" after a bite. He's discovered juice -- both the beverage and the word -- but we try to stick with his first love, milk, and water as much as possible. Most Benevolent Fiona likes to offer Rowan a jelly bean from the treat cabinet, which inspires shouts of "bean!" and dancing and hearty "yum"s. When we drop Fiona at the camp at the Y, Rowan moans, "Fifi! Fifi!" for a while. He misses her. And when we pick her up, he runs to her and there is much hugging. Yup. I think they like each other. Fiona's been enjoying the swimming portion of camp (though has refused to sign up for swim lessons); just two more days left. We decided to leave next week open for play dates and field trips. After that, it's Maine and then full-day school and life will never be the same. Last week, Brian stayed home with Rowan so that Fiona and I could go to Sesame Place with friends. What fun! Fiona loved the rides (mostly dry, though we did hit the lazy river twice) and unexpectedly sought out the characters -- before we went, she insisted that she didn't like them, but her tune abruptly shifted once she spotted them wandering around the park. The Count razzed her, offering her his hand for a high five and then pulling it back before she could hit it. She was charmed. Fiona drew this amazing cat picture (below). I am pretty sure it's her first foray beyond drawing humans and rainbows. She was frustrated that her "s" didn't come out well (and didn't think my attempt to fix it helped). Perfectionism at 5 hurts.
