He's also quite confident about climbing on hands and knees up and down the stairs, but now he wants to master them while upright. He has a ways to go, but those long legs are coming in handy.
Rowan turned 21 months old earlier this week. In another three, he'll be a full two years old, and we'll stop counting months. Just halves and quarters. Because he's still not particularly verbal, he still seems like a baby to me, but everything biological points to him being a kid. Perhaps the words will start flowing soon and everything will change. For now, he's added the words "stick" and "Jane," Fiona's friend from school who gives him lots of hugs. He's also saying "yeah!" instead of "mah," at least most of the time. And he uses a very expressive sound with no consonants ("Ehhh eeeeeese!") that seems to mean, "There it is!" Rowan popped another molar -- bottom right. That makes 10. He's really enjoying taking bites out of his food and chewing. Rowan is enjoying swim class. The teacher can't believe the progress he's made in three weeks. This week, he wanted to wear water wings and also let me float him on his back for a short spell. Encouraged by the teacher, I dunked him under water at the end of class. He was a bit stunned, but I think the activities of all the other moms and kids distracted him from any distress. He just wiped his eyes and moved on. Learning to jump is a two-year-old milestone, and wouldn't you know Rowan has recently been spotted squatting down and then quickly extending his legs, as though practicing for the big event. Here's video. He's also quite confident about climbing on hands and knees up and down the stairs, but now he wants to master them while upright. He has a ways to go, but those long legs are coming in handy. Fiona's really into her dance classes. She did a beautiful improvised performance this week in ballet (see video); she was beaming from ear to ear while she danced. It was lovely to see her so confident and in her element. The Olympics were held at Fiona's school today. Fiona's job, in addition to performing in the balancing/tumbling obstacle course and the "swimming" competition (riding scooters on their stomachs), was to announce (with her friend Jane), "Welcome to the 2014 Pilgrim Olympics!" They did so in their sweetest little voices.
