Incredibly, Rowan has dealt very well with the drops. In fact, he says "Yay!" when they hit the inner corners of his eyes. He then squirms and winces and rolls his head around, but it's not been the crying/full-body-resisting/two-man job I'd expected. So good news that his eyes have cleared up AND it hasn't been a huge deal.
While Fiona's been snuffing thick, brightly colored mucous for what feels like an eternity -- boogs, boogs, go away -- Rowan somehow is the one who ended up with pink eye. He went to the doctor Monday for the MMR vaccine and simultaneously was diagnosed with bacterial conjunctivitis. A week of eye drops three times a day? It's like a dream come true. Rowan has turned into one of those boy-boys who really likes vehicles. He's into books about trains and trucks. He has been carrying this bus around lately, even taking it in the car and holding it in his lap. He brought it to Fiona's dance class Thursday and happily pushed it around on the floor for 45 minutes (in between snacks and watching Fiona's class). Rowan still enjoys pushing the toy stroller, the toy grocery cart, and Fiona's scooter around. Perhaps he likes pushing things because *he* gets pushed around so much. . . . Lately, Rowan is often spotted wearing a helmet, with a vehicle in one hand and his milk cup in the other. That's living. The final word on Rowan for this week is his new word: Fan, pronounced "naan." When he was ~10 months, I remember him once again marveling at the ceiling fan, and making a "ffff" sound when I said, "Can you say 'fan'?" For the past year, he's continued to marvel at ceiling fans, but the "ffff" sound went away. I'm glad he has a word for one of his great fascinations. We got a bike trailer and now the four of us can ride together in style. We need to get a new helmet because the Dora one Rowan is wearing is too snug on both kids (comin' your way, Penelope!). I'm pretty sure Fiona could fit into it up until recently, but li'l man has a big noggin. Anyway, it's been fun to get out and go together these past few days. I hadn't been on my bike since early in my pregnancy with Rowan. Fortunately, riding a bicycle is just like riding a bicycle. Ba-doom ching. It's birthday party season again for Fiona. I'm getting pretty good at finding quality gifts for under $10. It's a little daunting for us cheapskates because lots of these parties take place at special venues. In the past year, we've been to Gymnastika, Jumpnasium, a dance studio, The Little Gym. What ever happened to the good old-fashioned living room shindig for five of your closest friends? Fiona has big expectations for July 23rd, for which she is currently planning a shooting star theme (blue, purple, and gold balloons will be used for decorations, naturally), but we're hoping to manage a balance between special and low-key. Wish us luck. I decided to invest in some headphones for the kids to help us survive our upcoming trip to Florida. Sure, we'll bring books and toys and snacks for the flight, but JetBlue has individual TVs and, of course, we have the iPads, so the headphones will be a sort of security blanket. I'm not at all concerned about Fiona enduring the trip, but I think it's going to be a long journey for Rowan, who will be in our laps (under 2s ride free, even if they're huge -- see the part above about being cheapskates). With any luck, there will be napping and calm, but can you really count on a toddler to be predictable and reasonable? Ha! So yeah, I will not be afraid to use a little technology to get us through. Once we're comfortably settled in New Smyrna Beach, I'm sure the beach and the lizards, not to mention Grandma, aunts and uncles, and cousins, will be all the entertainment we need.
