It's been a week-plus to challenge all weeks. Permit me to complain: Last week was February break, a useless week off from school that does nothing for anyone except for the people who have enough money to fly far from the doldrums of winter. We are not those people so I planned our week carefully with classes and play dates. On Wednesday, we were scheduled to drive north to see the little cousins and Deedee and Granddad. The kids were counting down, they were so excited! And that very morning, Rowan woke up with the stomach bug that shook the world. Vomiting, explosive diarrhea, lethargy, fever. The. Worst. And after three days, when I called the pediatrician's office, they said, "Oh, the diarrhea kind? That can last 7-10 days." I almost lost my mind with the thought of cleaning up liquid poo for another week. Anyway, Rowan powered through and, knock wood, has completely recovered. His appetite is insatiable, making up for all those pounds of fluid he lost. Fiona went back to school Monday, so life started to return to normal -- until Fiona and I got sick with a mystery virus. Fiona was home from school Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Her only symptom? A fever. She was tap dancing and singing, and the fever would go away, and then out of nowhere it'd come back. Yesterday the doc surmised that she had a milder, gentler version of Rowan's stomach bug. Nothing to do, just wait it out. She's back at school today, and my fingers are crossed. How many days until spring? Before the black cloud descended -- and while waiting it out -- we: Fiona's palate is broadening. Sure, she still gags on plenty of stuff, but she actually admitted to liking black beans! cauliflower! brussels sprouts! Rowan will pretty much gobble up anything unless he doesn't feel like it (the whims of a 2-1/2 year old). Dinner will never be the same again -- in a good way. Brian made this cool triptych (below). Rowan didn't even have teeth in the first two photos! He's changed a lot in such a short time.
