Obviously, Fiona is imitating my behavior with Rowan. She comments a lot on what she observes. Last night, I couldn't conceal my laughter when Fiona saw Rowan in my lap, taking a break from nursing, and said, "Mama, he is not chewing on your boob."
As for me being a grandpa, Fiona has noticed that she has two grandmothers but only one grandfather. We've explained as much as we think is reasonable for a three-year-old to digest, that she has two grandfathers but one of them died. But it's a hard concept to understand. She is sad to have missed out on knowing Grandpa McCabe. Sometimes when she's playing, she'll say one toy is a mother, one toy is a father, and another toy is a grandpa.
Fiona also asks questions about Papa Phil because there's a photo of him that I keep on the refrigerator. "My papa is dead?" She asks me. When I respond yes, she asks, "Why?" Whew. Heavy stuff. But I'm glad she wants to know; I want her to know, too.
