Also new in Fiona's world: music. Until now, if you asked Fiona what she wanted to hear it would be "I Just Can't Wait to be King" from The Lion King or "Under the Sea" from The Little Mermaid. Lately, it's "What Makes You Beautiful" by One Direction, and "I Hate Myself for Loving You" and "Bad Reputation" by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. I hadn't heard the former until she requested it. Apparently she heard it at camp over the summer. As for Joan Jett, I suppose I'm guilty. There was an ad for a Halloween decoration called Bone Jet--a skeleton with big, black hair, a leather jacket, and a guitar--in a magazine, and Fiona had MANY questions about it. So I played her "I Love Rock & Roll" on YouTube. She loved it--so did Rowan (click for video)--and asked for more.
The other week we had some unwelcome visitors. I'm not talking about Shannon, Greg, and Nora, they were a delight. After the humans departed, we discovered visitors of the bug variety. Lice. I was told that it would be hard to spot lice in Fiona's hair because she's so fair, but in fact it was quite easy to see them crawling around near her temples. And guess what? I had them, too. And then even Rowan had a couple of nits. The injustice of preschool. So Fiona spent most of last week home with Rowan and me. She was matter-of-fact about the whole thing. "Mama, do I have school today?" she'd ask. "No, honey, not today," I'd respond. "Is it because I have bugs in my hair?" I suppose it's good she is bug-curious. Ba-doom ching! The upside of the lice debacle was that I got to spend a lot of time with my little girl, her head in my lap as I sifted inch by inch through her gorgeous white/yellow/orange/gold hairs. She was extraordinarily patient. After a long period of apathy toward wheeled man-powered vehicles, Fiona has gained interest in riding her bike. We take it to the dead-end around the corner and she cruises--slowly, cautiously--with a few periodic pushes from Mama or Dada. Also new in Fiona's world: music. I was nervous and Rowan was curious so I had to be fast, hovering while he ate Cheerios and watched "Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood." Over the ears was the trickiest (and least successful) part. It still sticks out because that's what adorable baby hair does, but it's tidier anyway. The locks have been sealed in a baggie and put in his baby book. This toy, which I call Whack-a-ball (not sure of its actual name), is Rowan's current love. Four balls, four holes, one mallet. One of the balls went AWOL somewhere between Fiona's babydom and Rowan's (and another ran off more recently), but Rowan is very content to push the remaining two balls through with his hands, over and over. Baby therapy?
