Fiona watched and enjoyed "The Wizard of Oz." We borrowed it from the library. Those flying monkeys did not phase her in the least. Go figure. The witch? Maybe a little bit, but nothing long-term, for sure. Did anyone every realize how poor the acting is in the movie? Geez. Last night was Brian's holiday office party. Fiona looks forward to this all year because it's one of the few occasions when we take the kids into the city. There was a kids' musician there who gave them harmonicas (I'm both happy and sad about this) and we all danced and sang along to his Bob Dylan-style performance. Fiona had carrot sticks and cookies for dinner; Rowan had a pig-in-a-blanket, a bite each of a shrimp, cheese and a cracker, and probably copious cookies. Oh well. 'Tis the season. As I said to another mom at the party, "There will be vegetables tomorrow!" We had (more) carrots. Rowan had a major growth spurt. The first clue was that his pants are suddenly too small. All seventy pairs. The second clue was that I just measured him and he has indeed grown 2" since August. We went digging through the attic this week to find his 3T jammies (of which he has so, so many and about which he is so, so excited). Having opinions about clothing has begun. Like hats . . . What else have we been up to? Our annual caroling party was last week. We hit a new level of enthusiasm this year, which is so nice. You really need an enthusiastic crowd in order to not feel like a big dork while singing loudly from the piano. Know what I mean? The first year I insisted that all guests *must* sing; this year, I didn't need that kind of caveat. And already the requests are pouring in for next year (and next week, actually: one friend missed the party so we're doing a make-up of sorts). Rowan has started referring to himself as Rowan and to his sister as Fion-dah (as opposed to Roro and Fifi). He also says, "What's that?", "Who's that?", and "Need that" a lot. He talks about "snow," pronounced "no." No-boots, no-pants, "no out there" is a common phrase (when appropriate, which it was recently). When he says "pants" or "hands" they have a very round "a" sound. "Pahnts," "hahnds." He primarily speaks in two-word phrases, but he's generally able to convey his point.
