School week #2 (last week) went from teary Monday to ecstatic Friday. First day back, Fiona nervously hugged me before line up. On Wednesday, Mrs. R. announced that Fiona would be the "engine" on the "train" that day; Fiona ran to the door without a glance back at me as I tried to kiss her goodbye. She recently announced that she has a crush(!) on a boy in her class. The playdates are lining up. She is quickly getting into the swing of things. I am cautiously optimistic that it's going to be a good year. As to be expected since Fiona's already been down the Pre-K road, this is familiar territory for her. She can do things that I suspect other kids can't yet do, like write her name. So the teacher writes her name on all of her papers -- but Fiona writes her name anyway, next to where the teacher writes it. I can't quite put my finger on why, but I derive great pleasure from this. We got some new-to-us dress-up shoes recently, and both kids love clomping around in them. And boy, do they clomp. Fiona is scheming to wear them as part of her pop star Halloween costume. The rest of her costume elements have yet to be determined, but at least she has the shoes picked out. Despite the scowl, this guy has adjusted nicely to our new schedule. Lunch at 11:30. Nap at 12:30. I have to wake Rowan up at 2:45 in order to pick Fiona up at 3. Normally, he's quite unhappy to be awakened, but all that resentment dissolves when he realizes we're going to pick up Fifi. The kids have formed a mutual love/torment club. They're either kissing and hugging or tearing toys out of one another's hands.
