We had a delightful Halloween, if you don't count the heated discussions Fiona and I had about whether or not she should wear a shirt under her dress. (She wore one in the evening of her own volition, but refused one during the day. Moral of the story: don't waste your breath because she's going to do what she wants to do. I should know -- and respect -- this by now.) On November 1 (cough, cough), Rowan and I finally got around to carving our pumpkin. He decided on a spider, which we did free-hand. I admired his willingness to dive right in, and I was encouraged to let him have at it when I discovered that his preschool teacher lets the kids use pumpkin cutters to saw through cardboard (they were making a boat at school). We roasted the seeds and Rowan devoured a large quantity of them direct from the oven (he refused to eat them the following day, probably because he overdid it the first go-round). Rowan's never had much interest in coloring until now. Brian recently brought a couple of interesting bird-theme coloring books home from work and the kids have been working on them while we read aloud at bedtime. Or other times, a theme is chosen and we all do our own interpretation of that theme. Rowan's also been enjoying this peg game that he found at school. At pick-up, he wanders into the school library and finds something to do. I find this peg game to be very hokey yet calming.
