While Fiona had talked a lot about dyeing her hair, when dress-up time came she didn't mention it at all. I had bought some spray "fluorescent blue" dye just in case, as well as mermaid-blue shimmery eye shadow and nail polish, but she wasn't all that interested in dressing up after all. So she just pulled on her dress (and her medal from last year's school Olympics) and called it a mermaid.
While our costumes were not the most impressive, everyone was in good spirits -- Fiona running door to door trying to remember to say "trick or treat" and "thank you," and Rowan watching from his stroller with copious snacks. No tears on Halloweeen! I call that a success.
Plus, Fiona learned some great Halloween rhymes at school. Our favorite goes:
Stirring the broom (supposed to be "brew," but Fiona says broom)
Stirring the broom
Ooooooooh! Ooooooooh! (spooky -- this part is the best. Fiona really does it up)
Stirring the broom
Stirring the broom
Tiptoe tiptoe tiptoe BOO!
I learned recently that you sign the word "hot" by reaching out your hand and pulling it back. So I started using it with Rowan in reference to a mug of coffee or tea. He quickly caught on. "Aah!" he says and points. But he says it about every food item now, hot or not. Hmm. Hadn't counted on that. Who knew "hot" and "cold" were such tricky concepts?
So Rowan has 4 words currently:
Mama
Dada
(long, high-pitch) aaaaah! = cat
(short, regular-pitch) aah! = hot
And one animal sound:
mmmmm = wolf howl
