What a lovely week we had in Florida! We alternated days on the beach with day trips. To the zoo: There was a sprinkler park within the zoo, and for the first time in three years, we remembered this and thought to bring bathing suits. This was day #2 in Florida, and we weren't yet acclimated to the 80+ degree temps and humidity (we heard it was 40 and raining at home), so Fiona overheated quickly. She perked up as the water hit her skin. Rowan was cautious, but gradually got in on the action. On beach days, Rowan was happy to stick to the sand while Fiona wanted nothing more than to be in the ocean. She ran right in, though the water was a little chilly, and spent the time jumping, dancing, and twirling. Dada dutifully jumped 100 waves at a time. Fiona found a tide pool and she and Grandma netted hundreds of periwinkles. We fed the birds stale peanuts and admired a fisherman's accidental shovelhead shark catch. On our last morning, we saw dolphins jumping in the surf. I managed to read an entire novel, the true sign of a relaxing trip. On Saturday, we lunched with Great Aunt Eleanor and Eugenia. I'm pretty sure there's an aging portrait of Eleanor hidden somewhere. Either that or she's lying that she's 95. We went on a boat ride through Winter Park's canals and lakes. Fiona found it uninspiring, but Rowan claimed to enjoy it. Fiona and I spent a day at the Magic Kingdom. It was a very different experience this year. Fiona refused to meet any princesses, opting instead for thrill rides: Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, The Barnstormer, Splash Mountain. We survived the spooky Haunted Mansion, and waited (patiently) in a very long line to try the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. While Fiona and I sauntered around the Magic Kingdom, Grandma, Dada, and Rowan explored Disney's free offerings (views of Animal Kingdom and use of a kiddie pool). Rowan -- of all people -- hated riding in the plane. During take-off and landing he could be heard screaming, "Whoa!" and "I don't like this!" The boy doesn't like elevators either, and riding on a plane provides that same unsettling, levitating sensation times one million. Plus, the descent to Newark was BRUTAL. We were all green. Anyway, we're back in the northeast, which is also green but in a good way, and the daffodils and flowering trees are in bloom. Yay, Spring!
