Her loves: water (ocean, pool, sprinkler, whatever is available, no matter the temperature), sweets (ice cream, candy, lemonade), fashion, science experiments, graphic novels (and reading way past bedtime), TV (Jessie is the current binge-watch fave), telling jokes and scary stories, climbing, peace signs. She thinks she'd like to be an actress. She wants out of her Daisies troop and wants to try cheerleading again in the fall. She is excited for second grade.
This year, Fiona has given up some of the trappings of young girlhood. Like, no princesses. No more Fancy Nancy. She has zero interest in Barbies and American Girl dolls -- she wanted so many American girl doll accessories last year. This year, her wish list consists of chemistry sets, books (graphic novels, in particular), a Razor scooter, and a poop emoji pillow (I've just spilled the beans on what we got her). Because we were/are anticipating a big kitchen renovation project (currently scheduled to start on Tuesday), we are forgoing a big bash this year. Instead, Fiona has invited her three besties to bowling, milkshakes, and a sleepover. There will be doughnuts in the morning. Fiona at 8 is a funny, smart, stubborn, responsible, cool kid. This summer, Rowan is old enough to attend the town rec camp with Fiona (he made the cutoff by two days). This means that they are spending even more time together than usual, and they seem to be getting along very well. Fiona mother hens Rowan a bit, which I appreciate because this means his sunscreen gets reapplied and his ice-cream-truck change is accounted for. Rowan doesn't love the pool and the water parks, but they're made bearable by her company. And ice-cream-truck treats. They come home exhausted (lately the temps have been in the 90s and humid), but just on a Mon-Wed-Fri schedule while I teach, so we've been enjoying quieter Tuesdays and Thursdays when we don't have to pack lunches and dash out of the house in the morning. A lovely mix of busy and lazy. ***Update: On Fiona's birthday, she decided she was ready to get her ears pierced; we agreed. She is counting down the six weeks until she can take out the plain silver-ball starter earrings and wear something fancier. AND the day after her birthday, Fiona lost her third tooth: top center-right. The one next to it is quite loose. Her smile will never be the same.
