Most everything these days is called "Dada." The cat is a higher-pitched "Ahh?" "Mama" is sooo last month. For now.

You can call Fiona late to dinner (who wants to eat dinner anyway?) but DO NOT call her cute. Cute is the LAST thing she wants to be. Cute is for babies. If you want to encourage Fiona to wear a certain outfit -- or, as is usually the case, encourage her to simply get dressed in ANYTHING -- tell her that it's "fancy." Seriously. No matter whether it's a t-shirt and leggings or a tiara and high heels. Thank you, Jane O'Connor and "Fancy Nancy." Here are two of Fiona's recent ensembles: Fiona is learning to write the alphabet at school. Every week, the kids bring in something that begins with the letter of the week and they have the option to do worksheets concerning said letter. Fiona seems to have my worksheet-loving gene so she always does these. She enjoys writing and coloring, bringing home several pieces of paper every day. Recent subjects include rainbows and birthday cakes. Most works of art feature her name prominently. Rowan is 14 months old! He has two teeth and long hair that has gone from cute-shaggy to just plain unkempt. I'd like to cut it myself -- I think it just needs a quick snip over the ears, over the eyes, and that tail in the back has GOT to go -- but I'm concerned that he's going to have trouble sitting still while I go at him with sharp scissors. I have to work up some courage and get him some excellent snacks. Rowan is the Great Destroyer. He pulls everything out of the snack cabinet, squeezing the cereal bars to crumbs and popping the seals on the granola bar wrappers. He pulls all the books off of their shelves. But he is also learning about putting things away so all is not lost (including some of my sanity). He's very good at climbing up the stairs and is starting to figure out how to descend, too. He likes light switches and the thermostat, and always points to ceiling fans and lights. When Rowan holds his hands up and opens and closes them, he wants a song. His favorite is "Open and Shut Them," a song no one outside of Essex County seems to have heard of. He likes the part that says "open up your little mouth" -- he does. Here's a video. He also enjoys "There's a Little Wheel Turning in My Heart," "Itsy Bitsy Spider," and "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." I try to save "You Are My Sunshine" for nap time and "Good Night" by the Beatles for bedtime. But of late there is a lot of on-demand singing going on.
