Fiona: What are those places called where there are lots of rocks because people died?
Mama: Cemeteries?
F: Yeah, cemeteries. Why do people turn into rocks when they die?
M: They don't turn into rocks. People put a rock in the cemetery with the dead person's name on it and things about their life when they die. It's a way to honor and remember them.
F: Oh.
--long pause--
F: I have one grandpa or two?
M: My dad and Dada's dad are your grandpas. So you have two.
F: Did Dada's dad die?
M: Yes.
F: Was he 100 or 66?
M: 66.
F: Did he turn into a rock?
Fiona: Who is Nana's dad?
Mama: His name was Angelo.
F: Did he die?
M: Yes.
F: Who is Nana's mom?
M: Mary.
F: Did she die?
M: Yes.
etc.
F: When will the Honda get bigger?
M: It won't get bigger.
F: But it's smaller than the Toyota.
M: Yes, well, some cars are big and some cars are small.
The brain -- Fiona's anyway -- is an extraordinary thing.
