The family took a trip to the pediatrician this week. Thanks to Grandma for being my second-in-command. Our boy Rowan, at just 8 days old, has already grown by leaps and bounds. At birth, he was 8 lbs 3 oz, 20-1/2 inches. Two days later, before we left the hospital, he weighed 7 lbs 13 oz (standard baby weight loss). This week, the scale at the doctor's office showed that he was up to 8 lbs 6 oz, and had actually gained an inch in length. (His head, for those who are keeping track, measured 37 cm.) You see that smug grin in the photo? Already he's excelling and he knows it. Only department where R could improve is his eyes: they are kind of goopy. Doctor said it's probably blocked tear ducts and can be treated with -- get this -- a squirt of breast milk to the eyes. So later when I was feeding R and started leaking, I leaned over the little fellow and let some milk puddle up in the corners of his eyes. They do actually look a bit better, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to "treat" him again. Here's a boob in your eye. Fiona also did well at the doctor's office. You may recall that she was quite fearful of the doctor at past visits, crying nearly the whole time whether or not she got shots. This time, a year after her last check-up, Fiona was friendly and social and cooperative (at least with the nurse and doctor if not always with me). Fiona's in the 75th percentile for both height (38") and weight (32 lbs). She scored perfectly on her vision test and jumped in the air every time she gave an answer. The doctor asked her questions about who she lives with (Otis' name came first), if she brushes her teeth, had she been to the dentist, did she drink milk and eat a healthy diet, and Fiona complied. When it came time for her flu shot, the doctor and the nurse amped up the energy in the room to distract her, asking her questions, telling her to look at her brother, and ultimately promising her five stickers for being such a good patient. (She took five Tinkerbell stickers. Where did she learn about Tinkerbell?) Mama gave her a blueberry lollipop.

I knew about the breast milk!! Actually, you can use it for many things - cuts, ear infections, chaffing, etc. Breast milk is awesome. As is that smile on Baby Brudder's face!
