The best? A few things. First, he's saying "thank you." "Taaaa tyoo." Love the sound of gratefulness! His favorite song appears to be "Old MacDonald," because he'll periodically say "E-I-O" in a singsongy way, and will sometimes say it in the right part of the song when I sing it for him. Finally, Fiona typically sings the Alphabet Song when she washes her hands (to make sure she scrubs them for a sufficient amount of time. I know you're supposed to sing "Happy Birthday" twice but that got old fast). Rowan has caught onto this ritual and, when I wash his hands, starts singing the song. His letters are unintelligible but he has the tune down. What a talent!
Fiona has made a seriously grown-up decision: she now prefers the shower to a bath. It is a glorious development, shaving many minutes off of what can sometimes be a laborious event. Rowan always clamors to get into the tub, but he literally attempts to climb out when I pour water over his head. He stands and lifts a leg over the edge. This means that his bath can be as short as 5 minutes. Dampen, soap up, rinse, get the heck out. Fiona, on the other hand, tends to linger in the tub: first resisting getting in, then resisting getting out. The shower is nice because it's still a novelty, plus she got strawberry-scented Dora shampoo from Aunt Kate, and after shampoo and soap, voila!, water's off and we're done. Up until recently, Fiona's drawings tended to be more about her favorite colors (pink and purple, bien sur) than any particular subject, but lately she's come home from school with a lot of family portraits. I am honored to be in most of them. She focuses on looooong hair in various colors, and has been adding on dresses, shoes, headdresses, arms, fingers, and nails as they've become more sophisticated (I think this is part of why I'm in many of them -- girls = more accessory potential. Dresses came before limbs). The above is just a sampling. A psychologist might note how Rowan looks more like a little Jujube in the grass than a human. She explained that he is a crawling baby; since he has been walking for 4 months, this is a touch puzzling. Regardless, I adore her pictures and always look forward to seeing her latest. Other recent subjects include rainbows (in ROYGBiV order), fireworks, shells, and a multicolored pond. Fiona has control issues. While Brian and I work around her demands and tantrums at home, it can get a little awkward with play dates. Today she was mad that her friend wanted to wear a certain pair of dress-up shoes, even though she has two other pairs. This escalated to tears and, when I was trying to assuage her with a snack, she got mad when her friend refused peanut butter crackers because SHE wanted peanut butter crackers and SHE wanted them to eat the same thing. Fiona insists that she is the victim in every case and has a _very_ hard time apologizing. Is this what being 4-1/2 is about? Anyone want to encourage me that this is a phase? I feel as though she's regressed, but then again perhaps this is her asserting herself in the world. "You will do as I say! Right?!" And, of course, her friends really aren't too into that. The day has finally come when Rowan, 19 months old, can at last hold his own darn sippy cup. Can I get an amen! In fact, he will take it from you if you try and hold it for him. Hallelujah! Boy still has a mere 7 teeth, but today I saw an alarming lump in his gums that, I'm guessing, is a large molar trying to push its way through. Ouch. He was a little cranky this morning. Hmm. Wonder why. The other night at bedtime, Rowan turned to me, gripped my ear and said, "Eeee." I've tried to get him to say it again, but he's reluctant. He'll repeat "cheese" back to me when I offer him a cheese stick, and also "tube" when I offer him a toddler food-tube thingy. He'll say "bye" sometimes at appropriate moments, though, you know, only when he feels like it.

You probably just write when there is something significant going on, instead of about all the minutiae I document.
