On New Year's Day night, we drove out to the little zoo to enjoy their holiday lights show.
Happy New Year! We celebrated New Year's Eve at a friends' house party about a mile down the road; we knew to call it a night when, at 8:30 pm, Fiona was found asleep leaning against Dada's stool on the kitchen floor. We party! Seriously, dessert a mile from home with a few friends was just about the perfect celebration. Kids were in bed by 9:30; adults were in bed by 10:30. Happy New zzzzzz. On New Year's Day night, we drove out to the little zoo to enjoy their holiday lights show. We savored our remaining days of school vacation by: Playing in the little bit of snow we got. Mimi gave us these cheery birds for the garden. Playing games. Those who knew me as a child know that I have always loved board games, so it was a thrill to introduce Fiona to Sorry! We also enjoy No-Stress Chess, which was a Christmas gift and a great introduction for Fiona and me to the game. Playing games with Fiona has become a pleasure. She's a good sport about winning and losing, she respects the rules, and she likes to play. Gone are the days when she'd knock over the Candy Land board because she didn't like the card she'd drawn or because she'd lost. Brian tends to lose Spot it! Jr., and sometimes if the three of us are playing, Fiona will whisper to me that we should "let Dada win this one." There's a lot to be said for the maturity of a 5-1/2 year old. Hot Wheels! Deedee and Granddad gave Rowan a set of cars, and I scored some tracks from a neighbor. The music room has been taken over by loop-de-loops and shark tanks. Brian has tapped into his childhood talents and set up some fantastic courses for us. Here's one thrilling example. And now we're back into the swing of things. Fiona's at school. She is excited about her sewing class -- last week, she sewed her first stitches and learned how to attach buttons. Rowan is back in swimming class Saturday mornings, gym class is Friday, and music starts Tuesday. He's a renaissance man. Preschool registration is open! Rowan and I are going to tour a few schools in the next couple of weeks. Little boy starts school in September.
